Robust and efficient solution of large-scale multiphysics problems requires continual development of mathematical and computational infrastructure. Rethinking the standard solver methodologies can be shown to potentially reap great benefits in terms of performance and robustness. We discuss success stories and interesting applications of composable and hierarchical nonlinear solvers. We also discuss the construction and application of robust multigrid methods for nonlinear and linear problems. Various ongoing efforts to build tools and methods for large-scale simulation are described, and future directions elaborated upon.
