The Ecogrid EU demonstration on the Danish island of Bornholm is currently testing several smart grid technologies on a large scale. Two thousand customers – 100 industrial loads and 1900 households – have been equipped with a range of automated controllers and smart meters that receive a real-time electricity price and adapt consumption levels accordingly, while respecting customer preferences.
The flexibility offered by the demand is used to remedy imbalances cause by uncertain wind power generation. The mathematical formulation of the unit commitment models that achieve this is presented, and forecasting techniques for evaluating the price-elasticity of the demand are shown.
Controlling direct space and water heating is critical to the demonstration, as it represents half of household electricity demand and one of the biggest sources of flexibility. Controller design, comfort impacts and costs savings are also shown in this talk.
