LANS Informal Seminar: Lois Curfman McInnes and Hong Zhang

June 30, 2008 @ 15:00 CDT

Seminar Title: Parallel Newton-Krylov Methods in Edge Plasma Modeling
Speaker: Lois Curfman McInnes and Hong Zhang, MCS

Date/Time: 2008-06-30 15:00
Location: Building 221, Room A-261

Description:
Magnetic-fusion energy (MFE) devices are large, complex systems to develop a major new consumer energy source. Many MFE plasma models incorporate large-scale nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) describing the confinement of hot plasma in electromagnetic fields. This presentation will introduce the use of parallel preconditioned Newton-Krylov methods in PETSc for the solution of nonlinear PDEs arising in edge plasma modeling. This parallel edge application is a key part of a coupled core-edge-wall modeling capability being developed by the Framework Application for Core-Edge Transport Simulation (FACETS) SciDAC project.
