Seminar Title: Geophysical Retrievals of Marine Boundary Layer Clouds from Remote Sensing Measurements
Speaker: Virendra P. Ghate & Maria P. Cadeddu, Atmospheric Scientist & Principal Atmospheric Research Engineer, EVS/ANL

Location: Bldg. 240, Rm. 4301
Description:
Marine boundary layer clouds reflect greater amount of radiation back to space compared to the underlying ocean surface, while emitting similar amount of longwave radiation as the ocean surface. Hence, these clouds have a net cooling effect on the earth’s surface making them an important component of the Earth’s radiation budget. Although important, these clouds are poorly represented in the Earth System Model (ESM)’s used for predicting the future climate due to various reasons, one of them being our lack of understanding of basic processes modulating these cloud systems. To address this need we use data collected by various satellite and ground-based based active and passive remote sensing instruments to derive cloud macro- and micro-physical properties, and the thermodynamic state of the boundary layer.
