We<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">provide a unified formulation of these problems and many others. Natural algorithms for solving these <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">problems include adaptive search, which is a greedy deterministic selection rule, and adaptive<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">sampling, which is a randomized selection rule based on distances to existing prototypes. We evaluate <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">the utility of the two approaches theoretically and empirically, pointing out when each approach is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">preferable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">Bio: <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;color: #212121\">Robert J. Webber is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California San Diego.
