Existing works in this area largely focus on settings in which sensors are identical in quality, measurement type, and cost. In such cases, the optimal sensor placement problem is constrained primarily by the number of sensors. In contrast, we study sensor placement with heterogeneous sensor types and costs, leading to a knapsack-constrained binary optimization problem. We develop novel randomized greedy algorithms for D-optimal sensor placement in this setting that achieve significant computational speedups over classical greedy methods. The focus will primarily be on linear inverse problems, where we establish theoretical guarantees using tools from submodular optimization. We also outline extensions to nonlinear inverse problems, where we employ linearized forward models along with a Bayesian approximation error (BAE) approach to account for linearization error.

Bio: Alen Alexanderian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at North Carolina State University.
