{"id":68,"date":"2017-07-19T20:50:26","date_gmt":"2017-07-19T20:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/press3.mcs.anl.gov\/naise-students\/?p=68"},"modified":"2017-07-19T20:50:26","modified_gmt":"2017-07-19T20:50:26","slug":"toward-an-artificial-neuron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.cels.anl.gov\/naise-students\/2017\/07\/19\/toward-an-artificial-neuron\/","title":{"rendered":"Toward an Artificial Neuron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hello, I am AnnElise Hardy, a biomedical engineer at Northwestern Universit<\/span>y, \u201819, and I am working with Elena Rozhkova in the Nanoscience and Technologies Division as part of the larger Artificial Neuron Group led by Chris Fry. \u00a0The group is working towards creating an artificial neuron, a bio-inspired assembly. \u00a0The proposed design will place light activated transmembrane proton pumps either taken from the archaea <i>Halobacterium halobium<\/i>, or created synthetically, on a gold compartmentalized structure in order to create an assembly that can mimic the low-voltage ion flow of a neuron. \u00a0These \u201cprotocells\u201d are the first step in creating an artificial neuron to then be used in neuromorphic computing systems.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently, I am working to isolate the proton pumps, each attempt takes a few days and a couple more days to grow more archaea. Our first few attempts were not successful, but we are adapting our procedure to address what we think the problems are. \u00a0For example, we have increased the amount we distress the cells in order to break up the membranes more.
