{"id":210,"date":"2010-07-16T17:37:21","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T23:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/press.mcs.anl.gov\/virtualization\/?p=210"},"modified":"2010-07-16T17:37:21","modified_gmt":"2010-07-16T23:37:21","slug":"another-barrier-goes-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.cels.anl.gov\/scienceclouds\/2010\/07\/16\/another-barrier-goes-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Barrier Goes Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Right on the heels of Amazon\u2019s groundbreaking news on the Cluster Compute instances a couple of days ago, comes <a href=\"http:\/\/eon.businesswire.com\/portal\/site\/eon\/permalink\/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20100715006143&amp;newsLang=en\">this announcement<\/a> about a partnership between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cenic.org\/\">CENIC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnw-gigapop.net\/\">Pacific NorthWest GigaPoP (PNWGP)<\/a>, and Amazon: two 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) connections to Amazon S3 and EC2. This connection will be available to CENIC and PNWGP member institutions (educational and research institutions on the West Coast and in the Pacific North-West) &#8212; among others, the many ocean scientists of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanleadership.org\/programs-and-partnerships\/ocean-observing\/ooi\/\"> Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI) <\/a>who we are working with to develop cloud-based scientific infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we can now not only use IaaS to lease supercomputers \u2013 we can move data to those supercomputers fast. While so far these high-speed connections to Amazon are not generally available, it will be interesting to see what scientists will be able to do with them, what performance will be achievable in practice, and how it will change the scientific use of cloud computing.
